Trying Harder to Overcome Fear and Anxiety?

I have great respect and admiration for clients who come seeking help. They have usually been trying hard for a long period of time to solve the problems that trouble them. Their well intentioned efforts have just fallen short.

Trying harder to make problems go away is like having somebody tell you, “Don’t think of pick elephants.” It just does not work. I have had clients who shared their expectation that if they just loved Jesus more, life would be better. That doesn’t work either. God often calms our hearts in the midst of storms rather than calming the storm.

One of the common responses to challenges in life is anxiety. Rapid breathing and a fast heart beat are all too familiar to many people. Students need to leave their classrooms at school. Adults change their driving patterns to avoid overpasses. Many isolate themselves to avoid crowds. Life does not have to be that way. Having a safe person to talk through the root issues causing the anxiety can have a tremendously positive influence on people.

Sometimes anxiety can become so potent that clients need to consult with their medical doctor for some medicine. That is not a sign of weakness. It is an indication that there is a physiological issue that needs the be addressed. I should note that my bias is that we over-medicate in America. However, in the right time and right place, medication can make all the difference in the world for people.

We have counselors on staff who are ready to encourage you and provide perspective as you deal with anxiety. Know that it is a common challenge. We would like to help.
